Using iTEP Conversation To Accept And Place Work And Travel Students
The information in the table below is based on years of iTEP Conversation test scores. Thousands of Work and Travel students have been tested with the iTEP Conversation exam. These scores have been used to accept students into the Work and Travel program and then used to place students in summer jobs. This chart is a starting point to accept students into the program. The “typical jobs” are just suggestions.
If you find a student has a good attitude and self-confidence, they may be able to take on a higher-rated job. Let iTEP take care of assessing English proficiency, and you can concentrate on other student qualities.
Score | Skills | Typical Jobs |
---|---|---|
90-100 CEFR High B2 to C1 |

80-89 CEFR B2 |
Students have learned the rules for English sentences and can express themselves most clearly on many topics with a variety of sentence structures and verb tenses. They can address safety issues for themselves and others. |

Pronunciation and intonation are still developing, but most of what they say is understood. They may hesitate a bit while searching for words. |
• Cook • Barback • Busser • Cafeteria Service • Food Preparation • Maintenance • Housekeeping at Inn • Snow Maker • Ski Mountain Maintenance |
50-69 CEFR A2 |
Students know the basic rules for English sentences. They can express simple ideas but might have problems with more complex sentences. They are comfortable talking about familiar topics, but for non-routine situations might make mistakes with things like verb tense and number agreement. They are still building vocabulary, but know enough words to respond to familiar topics. |
• Dishwasher • Housekeeping • Cleaning • Painting • Laundry |
30-49 CEFR A1 |
Students have a basic understanding of English, but will often hesitate while contemplating a response. Vocabulary and grammar are still developing, and they may have difficulty when a quick response is required. |
• Assistant (with limited need for English) |
1-29 CEFR Pre-A1 |
Students are at a beginner level of learning English and cannot yet verbally construct sentences that make communication understandable. |
The program is probably not appropriate for this student until their English improves. |
